Anzacs commemorated in Moonee Valley 2024

Ahead of Anzac Day on Thursday, 25 April, Moonee Valley City Council invites the community to join it in honouring the Anzacs at a commemoration ceremony on Sunday, 21 April at 3pm.
The ceremony will be held at the Queens Park Cenotaph in Moonee Ponds and will be led by Moonee Valley City Council Mayor, Cr Pierce Tyson, and Chief Executive Officer Helen Sui, alongside the Essendon RSL Sub-Branch.
Mayor Tyson said events taking place across the municipality, including services by Flemington-Kensington and Keilor East RSLs, were important commemorations of the thousands of men and women who have served in Australia's armed forces since 1915.
"Events such as these provide an opportunity for us to honour the remarkable contributions – and sacrifices – of our service personnel and to reflect on their enduring legacy," said Mayor Tyson.
"The community's dedication and passion in organising these events highlight the significance of the Anzac legacy.”
The Anzac legend was born on 25 April 1915, when some 16,000 soldiers of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) landed under fire on the shores of Gallipoli, Türkiye. The Anzacs landing at Gallipoli helped shape the Australian story.
Their actions during the Gallipoli campaign left a powerful legacy, and their courage and sacrifices are remembered each year with commemorative services across Australia. Council has held its Anzac commemoration ceremonies at the Queens Park Cenotaph since 1929, when it was built.
Also taking part in the Queens Park ceremony will be Moonee Valley councillors, local members of parliament, representatives from various battalions and squadrons, as well as the Moonee Valley Brass Band and local schoolchildren.
Residents are encouraged to attend and pay their respects, and are invited to lay flowers or wreaths at the Cenotaph. Following the ceremony, an afternoon tea will be hosted in the Council chambers at the Civic Centre on Kellaway Avenue, opposite Queens Park.
