Last night millions of Australians across the country sat by their television willing Ash Barty on to Australian Open glory, with no doubt many young hopefuls now inspired to pick up a racquet and try to follow in her footsteps.

Tennis and sport in general can play a vital role in the mental and physical health of our community as it gets back on its feet. It also provides a social construct and interaction which is essential during these times of uncertainty.

With a number of community courts in Moonee Valley’s local neighbourhoods, it’s easy to have a hit of tennis – whether it’s social or competitive.

Moonee Valley City Council Mayor Samantha Byrne said she would love to see more locals harness that inspiration, to get out and get active on one of our community courts.

“We are so lucky here in Moonee Valley to have access to some great sporting facilities,” Mayor Byrne said.

“The Riverside tennis courts have recently been upgraded and redeveloped and are now available for bookings, along with other great local venues like Montgomery Park in Essendon and Boeing Reserve in Strathmore Heights”.

With outdoor activities and social distancing increasingly encouraged, now might be the perfect time to visit your local tennis shop and invest in some equipment.

Mayor Byrne recently met with local business owner Darren Fenech at his tennis shop Serving Aces in Moonee Ponds to get some advice on all things tennis.

“The team at Serving Aces offer friendly expert advice, they go out of their way to meet your needs and cater to your specific requirements. It’s the type of service you just don’t get in the large retail stores,” Mayor Byrne said.

“The store carries a huge inventory, including junior equipment in many different brands.

“There are many Moonee Valley businesses and sole traders doing it tough right now, however this has not stopped them from doing what they love and supporting our community.

“If you’ve ever considered playing tennis, or enjoyed watching the Australian Open and think you might like to get involved, there’s no better time to start.”
