Social and affordable housing support

Moonee Valley City Council supports access to appropriate housing for all people, and recognises the need for greater housing choice. Housing is a human right and plays an important role in ensuring our community is healthy, connected and thriving.

The City of Moonee Valley is growing and changing and many people are priced out of housing in the municipality. As our community changes, we will require a range of housing types, tenures and price points together with rental accommodation for lower-income households, and quality social and public housing across our neighbourhoods; to encourage people to stay connected to their communities.

In response to the challenges presented by housing affordability and in an effort to end homelessness, a number of providers have been established; delivering different outcomes and alternative approaches that Councils, developers, businesses and individual community members alike can take up to support social and affordable housing.

An example of one of these programs is where either a developer or individual community member registers their property with a participating provider, and when the property is sold, an amount is donated to a funding pool for social and affordable housing developments. This results in (for example) 0.1% of the sale price going towards building homes for those in need.

Another example is where either a business or individual community member provides a monthly donation towards urgent accommodation.

Council is not committed to a single provider or program, but welcomes and encourages both developers, businesses and community members to participate in such programs, with links to a number of providers below.
