Street tree planting begins for 2026

Moonee Valley’s streets are soon set to become greener!

Council is preparing to plant a new round of street trees across the municipality. The winter planting season is an ideal time for young trees to take root, with cooler temperatures and regular rainfall helping them establish strong, healthy growth.

Over the coming months, residents will notice new trees appearing in a variety of neighbourhoods. These trees are part of Council’s ongoing commitment in creating a greener Moonee Valley.

Every newly planted street tree receives care throughout a two‑year establishment period. During this time, Council provides regular watering, pruning, mulching and ongoing inspections to help each tree reach maturity.

Early maintenance is essential for trees to thrive, ensuring the trees grow strong, retain good structure, and are able to withstand heat, wind and periods of low rainfall. After the establishment period, the trees continue to be monitored and cared for as they grow.

Tree species are carefully selected to suit the unique local conditions across Moonee Valley. Each planting location is assessed for soil type, climate suitability, available space and neighbourhood character.

Council also chooses species that help increase local biodiversity, provide shade, and support bird and insect habitats. Importantly, selected trees must also be compatible with local infrastructure, avoiding conflicts with overhead wires, underground services, footpaths and roadways.

The planting program is a key part of Council’s long-term environmental plan, MV2040, which sets a target of achieving 30 per cent tree canopy cover across Moonee Valley by 2040. Increasing canopy cover plays a vital role in reducing urban heat, providing natural cooling, improving air quality and creating more comfortable places for the community to live, work and play.

As our climate continues to warm, green infrastructure such as street trees will be increasingly important in helping suburbs stay cool and resilient.
