Survive the heat this summer
Published on Monday, 8 December 2025
Heat can cause serious and life-threatening illness.
Be prepared for heat events this summer by planning ahead. Here’s some ways to keep cool on extremely hot days:
- stay indoors during the hottest part of the day and keep windows, curtains and blinds closed
- avoid using the oven
- use air-conditioning or fans
- wear loose, light-coloured clothes
- have cool showers, foot baths, or use a wet towel
- drink plenty of water
- sleep in your coolest room
- when outside, wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen and seek shade.
Don’t leave kids, adults or pets in hot cars.
Check in on those at most risk, including the elderly, people who live alone and those with medical conditions.
