Welcome funding commitment for iconic waterway

Moonee Valley Mayor Samantha Byrne has welcomed the announcement by Josh Wilson, Shadow Assistant Minister for the Environment and Peter Khalil, Federal Member for Wills of an election promise of $2.16m in funding to commence Stage 2 of Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek if Labor wins the next election.
“This funding commitment from the Opposition endorses the Chain of Ponds Collaboration Group’s work to transform the creek into an iconic Melbourne waterway,” Mayor Byrne said.
This announcement is the result of a strong partnership between community groups, Council and government agencies with a shared vision to revitalise the creek and its surrounds.
Councillor Byrne said “Preserving and protecting our waterways is a key Council commitment, and Stage 2 of Reimagining Moonee Ponds Creek will continue to positively transform the creekside environment, open up safe and enjoyable open space for residents.”
The commitment to Stage 2 is important as the Moonee Ponds Creek catchment is one of Melbourne’s most urbanised creek systems. It was seen as just a drain and flood channel for years, and we can see that through the degraded environment along its length, including significant areas of concreted surfaces.”
“This project is turning both the perception and reality of the Creek around for the benefit of all Melbournians.”
