3 easy steps to become a Wiser Driver

A woman sits in the drivers seat of the car with her hands on the wheel and smiles at the camera.

With busy roads, confusing rules and new road rules coming into effect each year, driving can be overwhelming.

Thankfully, Moonee Valley’s Wiser Driver sessions are back! Come along to Council’s free 4-week course for over 55’s and build on your driving experience with your peers. These classroom-based sessions help older drivers continue learning and improving to become better, wiser and safer drivers. No driving lessons or tests involved, enjoy a small discussion-based group session in an informal setting.

In preparation for the sessions, keep sharp and up to date with these three easy steps.

1. Regular medical checks

Ensure you are up to date with regular medical checks including vision and hearing. Many health problems occur gradually, and it can be difficult to notice them happen, it is important to ensure that you are regularly checking in.

Some warning signs you may encounter to prompt an appointment could be difficulty seeing street signs and road markings, memory problems such as forgetting where you have left your car, and feeling anxious while driving.

2. Car maintenance

Ensure you are setting yourself up right.

Keep your windshield, mirrors and headlights clean. Ensure there aren’t any distractions limiting your view to your dashboard and important signals.

Make sure your car is receiving regular maintenance and services at the mechanic to ensure there are no unexpected problems on the road.

3. Enroll in refresher courses

Consider taking refresher courses to keep your skills sharp and stay up to date with new road rules. Refresher courses can also help you get feedback on any questions you may have.

Moonee Valley’s Wiser Driver sessions begin on Tuesday, 11 November in Moonee Ponds. Morning tea will be provided.
