Community information on soft plastics recycling

The City of Moonee Valley residents can now bring certain types of soft plastics to the Transfer Station for recycling.
The following household quantities of soft plastic can be accepted as a recyclable item at the council Transfer Station
- Clear LDPE soft plastic including pallet wrapping and mattress film.
- Coloured LDPE soft plastic including pallet wrapping and packaging – this must be stamped with a number 4 code.
To ensure items are recycled and not sent to landfill, labels must be removed and soft plastics must be clean and free of contamination (including dirt, liquids and food).
Currently, soft plastics other than those detailed above are unable to be recycled and need to be placed in the red landfill bin for disposal.
Soft plastics must not be put in the yellow recycling bins.
Hard Plastics
We accept clean hard plastics with codes 1,2 & 5. These typically include:
- Milk and bread crates
- Pots for plants
- Clean drink and food containers (labels can be left on hard plastic items)
Council will continue to work on innovative recycling solutions for the community, particularly in light of the discontinuation of the supermarket soft plastics recycling program.
