Easy ways to keep cool during a heat wave

As the weather heats up across our city this weekend, it’s important to know how to stay cool.
Below are some tips for taking care of yourself and your family this summer, as well as ways we are helping you beat the heat.
Stay cool at Moonee Valley Libraries and Djerring Flemington Hub
We are extending opening hours at several air-conditioned facilities to give you a place to keep cool this weekend.
Sam Merrifield Library extended hours
- Sunday, 2 February, 11am – 8pm
Avondale Heights Library extended hours
- Sunday, 2 February, 11am – 8pm
All other library opening hours remain unchanged.
Djerring Flemington Hub
- Sunday 2 February, 9am – 9pm
- Monday 3 February, 9am – 9pm
- Tuesday 4 February, 9am – 9pm
Keilor East Leisure Centre, Ascot Vale Leisure Centre and Queens Park Swimming Pool are also open throughout the weekend.
Keep cool at home
If you are at home during a heatwave, stay indoors and use air conditioning or a fan to keep cool. Light, loose clothing can also help. Keep a spray bottle of water or a damp sponge handy.
It’s a good idea to stock up on food, water and medicines now so you don’t have to go out in the heat.
Stay hydrated
It goes without saying: drink plenty of water! That’s especially important if you need to be outside or if your day involves physical activity.
And don’t wait until you’re thirsty before rehydrating; keep up your water intake throughout the day.
Check in with loved ones
Now is a good time to reach out to family, friends and neighbours who might be more affected by the heat, like those over the age of 65 years, young children or people with certain medical conditions.
If you are part of one of those groups, reach out to your loved ones to let them know you are OK.
