A Reconciliation Plan is a commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. Council’s Reconciliation Plan is called Bagarru Bagarru Djerring, meaning “Shoulder to Shoulder Together” in Woi-wurrung language.

The Bagarru Bagarru Djerring Reconciliation Plan aligns with MV2040 and our Council Plan and Health Plan. It also aligns with the seven pillars within the Victoria Aboriginal and Local Government Strategy.

How did we create the Draft Bagarru Bagarru Djerring Reconciliation Plan?

In 2019, Council established the Reconciliation Working Group to guide the development of the Bagarru Bagarru Djerring Reconciliation Plan. The Reconciliation Working Group is made up of well-respected Aboriginal Elders, service providers, and community advocates.

Yarning Circles are an important traditional cultural method of communication for First Peoples and allow those in the circle to learn from a collective group, build respectful relationships and preserve and pass on cultural knowledge. In February 2022, we held Three Yarning Circles at local events in Moonee Valley.  During each Yarning Circle, we engaged with community members to consult with them about our draft Reconciliation Plan.  The sessions were facilitated by Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders and members of the Reconciliation Working Group. All community members who live, work, study or play in Moonee Valley were invited to attend a session and ‘have a yarn’ with Elders.  After we made this unique approach available to our community, we received positive feedback and support from everyone involved.

We continue to work actively in partnership with the Reconciliation Working Group and Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders, as well as our internal departments to implement what we have learned.
