Mamma’s Kitchen started during the pandemic in 2020 through funding from the State Government’s Working for Victoria initiative. The Council run program employs women from the Flemington and Ascot Vale Housing Estates to work from the kitchen in the Clocktower Centre.
‘Mamma’s kitchen program is breaking so many barriers for participants. These women, for many their first time, are being given the opportunity to work in professional environments and learn from experts in their field. The program has given them purpose, their confidence has improved tremendously and it has allowed them to practise their English and communication skills. What these Mamma’s have achieved through this program will not only impact their lives for many years to come but it will have lasting positive influence on their families and community.’ – Ijabo Hassan, Community Development Officer, MVCC
Here they cook, prepare and distribute culturally-appropriate and nutritious meals to those need while upgrading their existing certifications and develop new skills in a commercial kitchen.
During 12 months of the program our Mammas' cooked 23,650 meals feeding an average of 150 families per week!
Now after months of perfecting their recipes, our Mamma’s are ready to share their cooking with you. Arrive hungry to the Clocktower Cafe between 11am - 2pm for a rotating menu lovingly handmade by the Mamma’s.All the food is bought fresh, and almost all of it is purchased from local traders and the menu will rotate so there will always be something new to try.
Taking influence from their East -African heritage and adding modern twists to classic rolls and wraps, you’re bound to find something exciting for lunch!
