New program helps families get ready for school

Immunisation and library partnership

Families with children turning four now have a new way to support their child’s school readiness, thanks to a program launched by Moonee Valley City Council this month.

When families attend a Council run community immunisation session for their four-year old’s immunisations, they will receive a picture book to mark the completion of their childhood immunisations.

This will:

  • Promote an up-to-date immunisation record and exposure to books through library membership as positive preparations for getting children ready for school.
  • Reduce the spread of preventable infectious diseases in our community by increasing the uptake of 4yo immunisation services at Council facilities through 2026.
  • Improve childhood literacy and school readiness by connecting families participating in this program with free library books and services.

Council’s immunisation service is delivered by specialist immunisation nurses, providing families with a convenient, free and accessible option. With no Medicare gap and no need to wait for a GP appointment, families can stay up to date with ease.

Parents and carers who are unsure whether their child has missed any vaccinations can contact Council to check their child’s immunisation status for those under 14 years old. Catch-up vaccinations are also available for children who may have missed immunisations through the school system.

Council is committed to supporting children’s health, wellbeing and learning from their earliest years. By encouraging early literacy and ensuring children are fully immunised, the program helps set local families on the path to a confident and successful start to school.
