That’s a wrap! – Community Emissions Taskforce

Council has a key target in MV2040 to achieve zero net emissions for our community by 2040.
Earlier this year, our Carbon Emissions Reduction Taskforce, comprised of 45 diverse members chosen to represent a cross section of our community, met over the course of 3 full day sessions to discuss and workshop the important question, ‘How should Council reduce community carbon emissions?’. Councillors and community members were also welcome to attend the workshop as observers of the taskforce.
‘Council has a key target in MV2040 to achieve zero net emissions for our community by 2040. How should Council reduce community carbon emissions?’
Mayor Pierce Tyson was delighted to receive the Recommendations Report from Taskforce Members at the last workshop on Saturday 6 May 2023. The report included 14 agreed recommendations to reduce community carbon emissions.
Recommendations include,
- supporting businesses to reduce their emissions
- promoting solar for residential multi-unit apartments
- increasing canopy cover
- assisting homeowners and rental providers to convert gas appliances to efficient electric and
- considering how Council supports and resources community carbon emissions reduction going forward
Since receiving the report, Council officers have been busy reviewing and assessing programs to act on the recommendations. Following this, a report will be presented to Council in July seeking approval for a range of proposed projects and budget allocation from Council's Community Climate Emissions Reduction Reserve.
Group members said that the best part of the taskforce was 'Meeting other residents from Moonee Valley' and 'Learning about new methods, technologies and initiatives to combat climate change’
