Extreme wind gusts shut down Illuminate the River Festival, mid-performance
Extreme wind gusts of over 84km/h have forced the closure of the Illuminate the River music festival in Aberfeldie this afternoon, after the event was deemed unsafe to continue by Council’s risk advisor.
“Protecting our community, crew, artists, contractors and vendors from harm is our number-one priority. As such we must sadly inform you Illuminate the River cannot continue as planned this afternoon.
“I apologise and share your disappointment. I am so sad to have to end this event early, but safety is the most important thing to Council, and we cannot risk anyone being harmed, or worse.”
The event management team, specialist safety contractors, and emergency services have evaluated every possible scenario and alternative and the overwhelming advice is that the event cannot safely proceed. Wind gusts of over 80km/h have been recorded and are forecast to worsen this evening, presenting a major risk to the health and safety of patrons, crew and artists.
Speaking at the emergency briefing, Council’s risk advisor said “We’ve all thought about ways to keep this event on the road, but we are near to or beyond the established wind limits of the event infrastructure, with worse winds forecast to come.
“We have been closely monitoring the weather conditions with the event management team and all stakeholders, including emergency services and the Council, and have reached a collective decision that the event cannot safely proceed.
“We have an obligation to keep our event patrons, performers and staff safe.”
Prior to the event’s untimely cancellation, patrons were able to enjoy performances by artists including Teeny Tiny Stevies, Mia Wray, Max Lawrence, Sly Withers and Something for Kate. Families had the chance to take part in children’s activities, carnival rides, a Box Wars workshop, sample treats from food trucks and soak up the wonderfully festive atmosphere.
