Have Your Say: Naming the Flemington Hub!
What you need to know

Council’s landmark community and sports facility, the Flemington Hub at Debneys Park is on track to be completed next year. We’re excited to incorporate Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung language into the name of this vibrant multi-purpose community facility.
Assigning an official name to the facility will ensure compliance with the Geographic Place Names Act 1998 and the naming rules for places in Victoria. Two names that promote belonging and connection have been submitted and endorsed by the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Corporation.
We’d like your help selecting a name that best reflects the area and purpose of the facility:
Nugal Djerring Flemington
(pronounced: noo-goul jerr-ring)
Meaning: Belonging Together Flemington
Djerring Flemington Hub
(pronounced jerr-ring)
Meaning: Together Flemington Hub
Tell us your which name you prefer on our Your Say page.
Why are we incorporate an Aboriginal name?
Selecting an Aboriginal name will tie in with the artwork found around the outside of the building by Rosa Mar Tato Ortega. Rosa consulted with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Elders at the start of her project. Elder Aunty Gail gave Rosa a name for the project: Buwi Birrip Djerring (Weave, Thread, Create Together), inspired by the way Rosa works and the collage process for the artwork.
Her artwork includes references to important flora and fauna, including: Murnong (Yam Daisy) and Yellow Wattle, that Elders noted as significant to the Flemington area during her consultation. Native birds are included in the artwork which are significant to the area as noted through conversations with the Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek members.
Geographic Place Names Act 1998 and the naming rules for places in Victoria also recommend using Aboriginal names for new streets and buildings.
What is the Flemington Hub?
This new community hub at Debneys Park will provide services and programs to the community. It will be more than just a Community Centre - it will be a landmark building that will service the community’s needs and represents a significant investment from Council.
The upgraded centre includes a community hall, exhibition space, kitchen, training rooms, offices, an art room, a sport pavilion space and refurbished sports facilities will be among the many features of the new hub when it’s fully operational in 2023.
