Moonee Ponds Creek Bridge Opening & Tree Planting Day

Moonee Ponds Creek Bridge 28

We had heaps of fun down at the Moonee Ponds Creek for a bridge opening and tree-planting day with our Chain of Ponds Collaboration partners recently!

Mayor Samantha Byrne cut the ribbon to open the NEW Vanberg Road Bridge that connects communities in Essendon and Brunswick West.

Hundreds of trees, plants, native shrubs and ground cover foliage were successfully planted by attendees and our amazing Conservation Team. They even had recycled water, mini-watering cans and gloves for all involved.

We worked for our snacks with bicycle powered smoothies enjoyed by many, including our Mayor and Councillors.

Held during NAIDOC Week, this event had strong significance. Caring for Country and the environment are an important exercise towards Reconciliation. Thane from the Wurundjeri Council conducted a formal Smoking Ceremony to cleanse and welcome us to the land.

This was the first major project delivered with our Chain of Ponds Collaboration partners, including Moreland (Merri-Bek) City Council, Melbourne Water, the Friends of Moonee Ponds Creek and Moonee Bicycle Users Group (BUG).

It was made possible with funding from the Victorian Government through the Boosting Recreational Use of Waterways and More Trees for a Cooler, Greener West initiatives, along with budget allocations from Moonee Valley City Council, and Moreland City Council.

This project is testament to the great outcomes possible when neighbouring Councils band together, and when different areas of government work hand in hand with the community to achieve a shared goal.

This bridge is just the beginning - we can't wait to see the results of future works to come along the creek!
