About the project
The Maribyrnong River Master Plan provides a long-term, grand vision for future improvements to the section of the river between the Afton Street footbridge and Maribyrnong Road; some of Moonee Valley’s most popular and loved open space areas.

The Boulevard
In November and December 2016 we undertook a survey exploring how people get to the Maribyrnong River, where they park and what they do when they get there focussed on the Boulevard between Aberfeldie Park and the Holmes Road intersection We wanted to better understand how people are currently using this space, where they park their cars and why.
The results of this questionnaire will help inform the delivery the Aberfeldie Park section of the Maribyrnong River Master Plan. This includes exploring ways in which we can increase and improve the quality of public space along the river side of this area.
The existing public space between the river and this section of the Boulevard is extremely steep and includes a narrow shared pedestrian and cycle pathway. Before any plans to make changes to this area are endorsed by Council, extensive consultation will take place with local residents and users of this public space.
Riverside Park
As one of our most popular parks, we are committed to creating a new landscape design for Riverside Park involving the community. The upgrade of Riverside Park is part of the implementation of the Maribyrnong River Master Plan.
Community consultations were undertaken in 2015 with a concept design adopted by Council on 15 December 2015. View the adopted concept design.
Works were completed in January 2018 and the upgrade featured:
- Relocating the car park
- Improved play spaces including a new nature play area and additional play elements around the pirate ship
- Improved picnic areas with barbeques, retaining the rotundas and adding a shelter near the pirate ship
- Drainage and rain gardens to clean run off before it enters the river
- New paths and seating
- New trees and garden beds
- Open lawn areas
Minor changes were made to the concept design to ensure the project was constructed within budgetary constraints including removal of the ping pong table, removal and changes to some play elements, removal of one drinking fountain, changes to paving material and some garden bed areas.
Maribyrnong Park Lake
As part of our Maribyrnong River Master Plan we undertook works in 2013 to improve water quality and landscape surrounding the rotunda in Maribyrnong Park, Moonee Ponds - near the Boathouse Restaurant.
The works included installation of a system to collect and clean the water from existing stormwater pipes to improve water quality. The water quality will be improved through new raingardens which will be incorporated into the existing footprint of the lake area. The raingardens will have appropriate plants and soil filtration that will clean the stormwater.
